Black and White

I just found this post I never published from 2015.  It made me miss my chickens.  A LOT.  I don’t miss the 5:00 a.m. crowing.  I don’t miss late night bumblefoot operations.  I don’t miss giant chicken snakes (or small chicken snakes for that matter).  I don’t miss chicken poop.  I don’t miss panic attacks whenever I saw a stray dog, soaring hawk or prowling bobcat.  I don’t miss nasty chicken waterers.  I don’t miss unexpected funerals.  Raccoon attacks.  Rooster fights.

Sneaky Snake

Last week, I was casually checking eggs and freshening up the water when I saw him.  Black, with a pretty pattern, small, glossy eyes and a red tongue.  He saw me too.  And he left, after participating in a stare-off with me.  I guess I won, since he left first.  I told Addie about him,…

Wicked Walk 3/8/2016

Do you ever wonder why you blog?  Or, why you read blogs?  Sometimes I do. However, I keep coming back to the same answer. I blog for me.  And, when I have any spare time at all.   I love reading YOUR blogs! From New Zealand to Florida, Illinois to Maine, Kenya to Mississippi, Canada to Finland,…

Cock Fight

Now, before any of y’all get your feathers in a wad.  I am NOT a supporter of cock fights, dog fights, people fights or any violence in general. And, all I wanted to do tonight was watch the Academy Awards.  I’ve been looking forward to it for days.  Only, when I went to turn it on…

The Rooster Next Door

There is a rooster that lives next door, although for what, I’m really not sure. He has no hens, he has no chicks, he has no one to call up quick. So every day he moseys over, acting like he’s sniffing clover. But he’s not fooling anyone He wants a hen, a bit of scratch,…

Wicked Walk 1/26/2016

First of all, I’ve decided that even though I’m going to post a walk every Wednesday, it doesn’t mean the walk was actually taken on a Wednesday.  This will relieve me a great deal.  Thank you. So.  Today was windy, cold and sunny.  The entire day spread out like a banquet before me and I…

Confession

If you’ve been following this blog for any amount of time, you know I publish a ‘Wicked Walk’ every Wednesday.  Only, this past Wednesday, I didn’t.  This was due to several reasons. Number One.  Randy, my oldest and dearest rooster, has bumblefoot.  I’d never heard of it but was trolling the internet trying to find…

To Love

They say to have loved and lost is better than to never have loved at all.  Today I am not so sure.  Yesterday morning I awoke to let out my chickens into their courtyard, aka run, for the day.  I immediately noticed Stripe-Stripe was not among them.  I knew in my heart she was gone…

Chickens Don’t Swim

I want to know.  Are the poor decisions kids make out of innocent thinking or sheer ignorance?  Take for example my sweet Addie, lover of chickens, worms, snails, slugs, tadpoles, horses, the color pink, Third Day Christmas songs, mud and stuffed animals.  All-in-all what you would call a smart, cute, well-rounded child.  Plays the piano,…

First Outing

Remember those adorable chicks I introduced y’all to last month?  Well they have been growing like crazy and were REALLY ready to bust out of their little crate alongside their mother.  So I let them out to explore the world they hatched into and while doing so discovered something.  Baby chickens are the most difficult thing…
