Black and White

I just found this post I never published from 2015.  It made me miss my chickens.  A LOT.  I don’t miss the 5:00 a.m. crowing.  I don’t miss late night bumblefoot operations.  I don’t miss giant chicken snakes (or small chicken snakes for that matter).  I don’t miss chicken poop.  I don’t miss panic attacks whenever I saw a stray dog, soaring hawk or prowling bobcat.  I don’t miss nasty chicken waterers.  I don’t miss unexpected funerals.  Raccoon attacks.  Rooster fights.

House Progress!

Let me first express how happy I am to finally be having a house built.  I’ve been dreaming and drawing my house the way other little girls plan their weddings.  For. Years. Albeit, it is not my low-country cottage with enclosed porches and a library like Belle had in Beauty and the Beast, but hey. …

Sneaky Snake

Last week, I was casually checking eggs and freshening up the water when I saw him.  Black, with a pretty pattern, small, glossy eyes and a red tongue.  He saw me too.  And he left, after participating in a stare-off with me.  I guess I won, since he left first.  I told Addie about him,…

Down at the River……

Given the fact we live less than 3 miles from the beautiful Neches River, I’m sorry to say we only visit it 2 or 3 times a year, at best.  This particular Sunday morning, we ran lines.  It was about 7:15 and as soon as we crossed under the Highway 84 bridge, we noticed a…

Pumpkin Feeder

I am aware that recently I’ve bombarded your news feed and in-boxes with silly poems and walks.  So, I figured I better post something at least half-way useful.  If you are like me, and still have pumpkins from Halloween on your porch and a Christmas wreath on your front door, you will find this helpful. …

A Good Idea.

If you are searching for a really good idea, go fishing.  Fishing won’t help you find an idea necessarily but is simply a good idea in itself.  Especially when you have cute companions. The lake was still and the fish weren’t biting but that didn’t matter so much….. The mosquitoes were blissfully absent and while…

Berries

I planted an apple tree.  The one, single apple fell off due to a worm.  I planted blueberry bushes.  The chickens ate every last one in their reach, leaving me about five.  I planted peaches and plums.  The deer not only knocked off the fruit and ate it but also stripped the lower 2/3 worth…

A Herd, a Girl and a Bee

These pictures I took Easter weekend at my grandparents house.  It is Memorial Day.  I know I’m behind.  I’m sorry. Enjoy.  🙂  I love holiday weekends. And spring. And Texas. And my grandparents. And clover.  And America. Have a great Memorial Day and thanks to all those who have and those who still are sacrificing themselves for…

First Outing

Remember those adorable chicks I introduced y’all to last month?  Well they have been growing like crazy and were REALLY ready to bust out of their little crate alongside their mother.  So I let them out to explore the world they hatched into and while doing so discovered something.  Baby chickens are the most difficult thing…

First One….

I have one little girl.  Down the road there are four.  And Sunday they all came over to play, I sent them to check the eggs and let the chickens out for their evening stroll.  Almost immediately there were shrieks of terror and thundering footsteps.  I knew before I heard a word the first snake…
