Black and White

I just found this post I never published from 2015.  It made me miss my chickens.  A LOT.  I don’t miss the 5:00 a.m. crowing.  I don’t miss late night bumblefoot operations.  I don’t miss giant chicken snakes (or small chicken snakes for that matter).  I don’t miss chicken poop.  I don’t miss panic attacks whenever I saw a stray dog, soaring hawk or prowling bobcat.  I don’t miss nasty chicken waterers.  I don’t miss unexpected funerals.  Raccoon attacks.  Rooster fights.

Wicked Walk 3/8/2016

Do you ever wonder why you blog?  Or, why you read blogs?  Sometimes I do. However, I keep coming back to the same answer. I blog for me.  And, when I have any spare time at all.   I love reading YOUR blogs! From New Zealand to Florida, Illinois to Maine, Kenya to Mississippi, Canada to Finland,…

The Rooster Next Door

There is a rooster that lives next door, although for what, I’m really not sure. He has no hens, he has no chicks, he has no one to call up quick. So every day he moseys over, acting like he’s sniffing clover. But he’s not fooling anyone He wants a hen, a bit of scratch,…

Wicked Walk 2/9/2016

I spent this particular day waiting for 3 hours at the tax office, only to discover they were unable to see me.  Thus, my morning was spent.  I arrived home and threw together a lunch for my starving child.  Then I attacked my fruit trees with pruning shears. Then I went for a walk. Here…

Confession

If you’ve been following this blog for any amount of time, you know I publish a ‘Wicked Walk’ every Wednesday.  Only, this past Wednesday, I didn’t.  This was due to several reasons. Number One.  Randy, my oldest and dearest rooster, has bumblefoot.  I’d never heard of it but was trolling the internet trying to find…

Hawk Down

As self-proclaimed “Keeper of the Chicken” I’m not generally a big fan of hawks.  Birds of prey are not something I want close to my coop however they are incredible birds, of that there is no doubt.  And as long as they are catching rats, rabbits, snakes, frogs or whatever else they find in the…

Hell Week

Hell Week.  A common term for college folk (which I haven’t been in quite a few years) was experienced at my house in a whole new way last week.  I’ll give you a brief run-down so if my posts seem a bit scattered and I really make a grave spelling error, you will maybe forgive…

Wicked Walk 3/25/2015

I have a confession to make.  I forgot to walk until almost 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday March the 25th.  I worked most of the early morning and afternoon then spent 2 hours in the dentist’s chair having some much over-due work done.  Then I drove home in 10 to 15 minute intervals because the dentist…

I have a Pecker

I have a pecker.  At least one that I know of, anyone who keeps chickens has had a pecker too.  It is so maddening.  My advice to people with peckers is simple.  Identify the guilty party and remove them from the flock before they teach their bad habits to others.  My advice is easier to…

He Finally Came Down…….

Over a year and a half ago my flock was hit with repeated raccoon attacks resulting in multiple homicides.  The crime scenes continued to grow in frequency and brutality until I was reduced to less than half the flock I once enjoyed.  Then one night I awoke with a funny feeling in my chest, I…
