It’s funny how you can spend years walking by, or driving by, something and never see it. As a matter of fact, you can live with people for years, know people for years and never really see them either. Life just gets to fast, clouds our vision and creates a tunnel thru which we see only our immediate wants and needs, oblivious to the beauty, the life or the needs surrounding us. I was reminded of this while walking last week. Less than 1/4 of a mile from my house, from the road I walk and drive on almost daily, I glanced thru the woods and saw this…..
……….for the first time in 8 years of passing by.
I’ve no idea how old it is though I’d reckon close to 100 years, maybe more. The forest has consumed every other piece of human evidence. There are no boards, no broken glass, no scrapes of cloth. Only the chimney remains.
I wonder who lived here, who carved out their home among the trees so many years ago. Or even, if there were trees here. The woods hide all manner of histories and secrets when left to their own vices.
I wonder how they even built it so tall, with handmade wooden ladders I suppose. The work must have been tremendous.
I’ll bet they made the kids find and pick of all those rocks, don’t you? Some things never change, haha!
As a matter of fact I think I’ll bring Addie by and build a little fire, roast a marshmallow or two.
I bet the chimney would like that.
Wow, if that old chimney could talk! Lots of laughs, tears, prayers & conversations around that old structure! Love it!

Very nice! I cannot imagine that the chimneys on houses in our fairly young neighborhood will be standing in 100 years. Actually, about half of them have already been rebuilt!

I know, things just aren’t built the same anymore. So sad. 😦
